During the first half of the sixteenth century, the Guinigi family, who at that time were the Dukes of Lucca, decided to build their country home, Matraia was an ideal choice, due to its temperate climate and spectacular views over the city of Lucca and the "lucchesi" hills.
Over the course of the next five hundred years a small succession of owners have contributed to the conservation of the property in a way that has allowed it to now be beautifully restored , maintaining its character as a stately country house and estate, whilst transforming it into typical tuscan country homes.
